A sleeper bus travelling on National Highway 80 in Dong Thap Province, Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, suddenly hit three people sitting by the roadside on Friday evening, killing two and seriously injuring the third, local police said on Saturday.

The crash occurred at around 8:30 pm on Friday, when the bus, driven by 50-year-old Nguyen Tan M. of An Giang Province, was traveling from Lap Vo Commune to Sa Dec Ward in Dong Thap.

Upon reaching Lap Vo’s Vinh Phu Hamlet, the bus suddenly swerved onto the left side of the national highway and struck three people who were sitting and drinking water along the roadside.

One victim, identified as H.T.T., 19, of Dong Thap’s Lai Vung Commune, died at the scene.

Another victim, N.H.K., a resident of Vinh Phu, was rushed to hospital but later died of severe injuries.

The third person was seriously injured and remained in emergency treatment at Sa Dec General Hospital.

Lap Vo police coordinated with the provincial traffic police to examine the scene and conduct autopsies overnight as part of an ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash.
