Local officials said on Friday that locals in Nuoc Ngot Hamlet had been taking turns caring for the animal, which weighs an estimated 100 kilograms, for two consecutive days.
Residents first spotted the dolphin swimming close to shore on Wednesday morning and helped guide it back out to sea.
However, on Thursday morning, the dolphin drifted ashore again and showed signs of exhaustion.
The animal was barely able to swim and was being carried by the waves on Thursday afternoon, so residents decided to bring it to the local shrine for monitoring and care.
Locals continue to watch over the dolphin’s condition and are preparing a response plan should it fail to survive.
About 25 years ago, villagers buried a large whale according to traditional customs.
Until now, a total of four such sea creatures have been laid to rest there.
According to the beliefs of coastal fishing communities, dolphins and whales are regarded as deities that protect seafarers.
When these animals wash ashore, locals do everything they can to save them.
If rescue fails, they conduct a traditional burial ceremony at the shrine to honour the revered sea guardian.
