240kg wartime bomb safely detonated in north-central Vietnam

The bomb contained 80 kilograms of explosives

Authorities in Quang Tri Province, north-central Vietnam on Wednesday safely detonated a 240kg magnetic bomb believed to be unexploded ordinance from wartime.

On Tuesday, residents in Dakrong District, Quang Tri Province found the bomb in a local stream about two kilometers from La Lay International Border Gate.

After being notified of the find, the engineering force of the Military Command visited the scene to inspect the unexploded ordnance.

They found that the bomb, coded MK36, contained 80 kilograms of explosives, measuring 1.5 meters in length and 0.27 meters in diameter. Its damage radius was 1.5 kilometers.

Sappers and local authorities took several precautions before detonating the bomb.

They blocked nearby roads, notified residents along the border, and evacuated them to safety.
