The boy, from Van Phu Ward, was admitted to Yen Binh Regional Medical Center with multiple soft tissue injuries to the head, face, neck and shoulder.
Doctors said the child had a deep scalp wound exposing the skull and a severed left jugular vein.
According to family members, the child was attacked by a neighbor's dog around 4:00 pm on Friday.
He was taken to the hospital after receiving first aid at home.
Medical staff administered pain relief, intravenous fluids, and rabies immunoglobulin before transferring the patient to Lao Cai Provincial General Hospital for further treatment.
The hospital said the child's condition had stabilized.
A separate dog bite case was reported on Thursday in Luc Yen Commune, an area previously part of old Yen Bai Province, which was recently merged into an expanded Lao Cai Province under an administrative reorganization.
A child was treated at a local clinic after being attacked while playing with relatives.
