48 rescued from sunken vessel in East Vietnam Sea: foreign ministry
Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs late on Monday confirmed that 48 crew members from the sunken Vietnamese vessel Khoi Nguyen 18 have been rescued and are returning to shore, while search efforts continue for those still missing.
The 48 survivors were handed over to the Vietnamese authorities after being rescued and given medical care by Chinese forces. All are now en route back to land.
Rescue teams from both Vietnam and China, including ships and helicopters, worked urgently on Sunday and Monday despite rough seas, strong winds, and challenging conditions.
Vietnamese forces remain deployed to search for those still missing.
On Sunday, Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson of Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Khoi Nguyen 18 vessel had sunk while operating in severe weather conditions in the East Vietnam Sea.
The vessel was carrying 62 people at the time of the incident.
Vietnam immediately mobilized rescue operations, coordinating closely with Chinese rescue units and nearby vessels.
