Six coal miners were killed as a fire hit an underground coal tunnel in Uong Bi city in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Wednesday night

Six coal miners were killed as a fire hit an underground coal tunnel in Uong Bi city in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Wednesday night.

Only one worker escaped death. He is Ngo Van Quyen, 37.

The fire, which spread very fast, occurred at Dong Vong coal company in Uong Bi city as the six workers were working there.

Their bodies were pulled out on Thursday morning by rescuers from Vietnam Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Corporation.

Local authorities have managed to put out the fire at the tunnel which is 30-105 meters (98-345 feet) deep.

Also on Thursday morning, Vu Thi Thu Thuy, deputy chairman of Quang Ninh’s People’s Committee, and other concerned authorities were at the scene to direct rescue mission.

Quang Ninh authorities have decided to give a financial aid of VND6 million (roughly US$300) to each of the deceased victims.

Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
