72-year-old woman charged with growing over 600 opium poppy plants in Vietnam

She had grown the opium poppy plants to make herbal medicine for curing bone and joint diseases

Police in Vietnam on Tuesday took legal proceedings against a 72-year-old woman for planting opium poppy plants in her son’s garden. 

The woman is question is Trieu Thi Nay, from Bac Son District, Lang Son Province, located in northern Vietnam, police officers said.

Officers found and seized more than 600 opium poppies, around one meter in height, planted in the garden of Nay's son, 43-year-old Hoang Doan Du, in the district's Bac Son Town on February 25, Lang Son police said.

All the opium poppy plants at Du’s garden have been uprooted.

At the police station, Nay admitted that she had grown the opium poppy plants to make herbal medicine for curing bone and joint diseases.
