An elderly Vietnamese man in the southern province of Dong Thap has decorated his house with designs made from pesticide bottles.

The home of Nguyen Van An, 93, in Tan Hong District, has completely amazed Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters as there are rings of flowers and ceilings full of petals, among other decorations made entirely from pesticide bottles.

Passionate about having an interesting place to live, An came up with the idea to cut pesticide bottles into various figures and considered it a lifelong hobby.

Gathering the bottles, An said that he had to clean, rinse, and dry the bottles until the pesticide’s odor had completely gone, before crafting them into different shapes.

“Seeing that so many people keep throwing away used bottles of pesticide, I collect them to beautify my house,” he said, adding that his hobby is also helpful to the environment.

“The walls used to be in bad condition, but I couldn’t find bamboo to fix them, so these [the pesticide bottles] are the ideal substitutes and the house looks lovely with them,” the 93-year-old said.

An currently lives with his daughter and one dog. For daily needs the family is entirely dependent on the government’s monthly pension.
