An African swine fever (ASF) outbreak has struck Quang Phu Ward in Da Nang City, central Vietnam, leaving dozens of pigs culled and prompting urgent disease control efforts by local authorities.

The outbreak was first reported on July 10 when local authorities received notice of a dead pig at a farm owned by Nguyen Thi Dao in Ngoc My neighborhood.

Clinical examinations indicated symptoms of ASF, and one dead sow weighing 195kg was destroyed after samples were sent for testing.

The next day, three more households reported similar cases.

In Phu Quy neighborhood, Nguyen Thi Dien had a dead 250kg sow. Duong Van Anh reported a dead 157kg hog.

In Ngoc My neighborhood, Nguyen The Chanh had 25 pigs showing symptoms such as a high fever, eating disorders, lethargy, and skin hemorrhaging.

On July 12, lab results confirmed that pigs from Nguyen Thi Dao’s farm tested positive for ASF.

On July 14, the National Center for Veterinary Diagnosis also confirmed ASF in samples from the other three households.

Upon confirmation, authorities in Quang Phu issued emergency disease control measures, informing residents and ordering the disinfection of livestock areas, using lime and antiseptic chemicals.

A total of 28 infected pigs from Dao and Chanh’s farms were culled.

The ward also requested 100 liters of disinfectant chemicals from Da Nang’s Department of Agriculture and Environment to support containment efforts.

Quang Phu authorities are coordinating with relevant agencies to monitor the outbreak, destroy infected pigs, disinfect affected areas, and advise farmers against restocking during the outbreak, according to Nguyen Minh Nam, chairman of the ward administration.
