Hanoi’s AI-integrated traffic surveillance camera system detected over 19,300 traffic violations in the three months since its full-scale operation in mid-December last year, the city’s traffic police division announced on Monday.

Common infractions included running red lights, failing to wear helmets, and neglecting to fasten seat belts.

All recorded cases were reviewed, documented, and processed, with violation notices issued in 100 percent of the cases, ensuring both accuracy and timeliness.

On January 1, Hanoi police began piloting a fully digital administrative sanctioning process via the iHanoi application.

After over two months, 7,810 violations were uploaded to the platform, allowing violators to complete procedures entirely online.

The Hanoi Smart Traffic Control Center currently operates 1,837 AI cameras connected to traffic lights at 195 key intersections, enabling real-time adjustments.

During the three-month period, traffic police modified traffic flows at 188 intersections and established 22 ‘green wave’ corridors along major routes such as Pho Hue - Hang Bai, Ba Trieu, Tran Hung Dao, Vo Chi Cong, Nguyen Van Cu, Giai Phong, Dai La, Ly Thuong Kiet, and Trang Thi.

Traffic police conducted 446 signal timing adjustments and resolved 575 technical issues to maintain continuous and stable system performance.

As a result, vehicle throughput at intersections improved by four to over 18 percent.

Major congestion points, including Vo Chi Cong, Nguyen Thai Hoc - Ton Duc Thang, and Giai Phong - Truong Chinh Intersections, recorded consistent improvements ranging from six to 11 percent.

The system also detected illegal parking and encroachment on roadways and sidewalks.

These violations frequently disrupt traffic flow, increase congestion risks, and detract from urban aesthetics.

Additionally, more than 1,000 images documenting violations related to urban order and environmental sanitation were provided to local authorities for timely action.

The AI camera network has gradually perfected a fully digital violation-handling process, from detection and verification to electronic documentation, notification, and resolution.

Through the iHanoi platform, residents can look up violations, confirm details, and pay fines online without visiting police offices.

Furthermore, the center supplied image data to 58 investigative units, supporting public security efforts.

Integration with digital maps, covering 266 traffic diversion points and 108 flood-prone locations, also contributed to enhancing the city’s ability to proactively manage traffic and respond to emerging challenges during the period.

The Hanoi Smart Traffic Control Center officially began operations on December 13, 2025, marking the start of large-scale electronic traffic enforcement across the city.

The center serves as the command hub for 1,837 cameras of various types, all directly connected to traffic signal controllers and integrated with AI.
