All 6 Vietnamese students win medals at Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad

The two gold medalists are Nguyen Huu Tuan and Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, 12th graders from the High School for Gifted Students of the University of Science under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi.

The silver medals went to Nguyen Khanh Phuc, a 10th grader from Luong Van Tuy High School for the Gifted in Ninh Binh Province; Thai Van Gia Kien, a 12th grader from Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted in Ha Tinh Province; Dang Huy Hau, an 11th grader from Thang Long High School for the Gifted in Lam Dong Province; and Le Pham Duy Khoa, an 11th grader from the same school as the two gold medalists.

The 20th APIO took place from May 9 to 10, with the participation of 1,043 students competing in 37 teams from countries and territories worldwide.

Among them, 187 contestants qualified for medal consideration, with 16 winning gold medals, 47 earning silver medals, and 93 receiving bronze medals.

Vietnam’s national team initially consisted of 15 students who took the online exam at the University of Engineering and Technology under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi.

Under APIO regulations, Vietnam was allowed to select the six highest-scoring contestants for medal consideration.

Vietnam’s team ranked second overall alongside Japan, while Russia finished first.

The result helped Vietnam maintain its leading position in Southeast Asia in informatics competitions.

Based on the APIO results, the four best-performing students will be selected to represent Vietnam at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics.

This year’s exam was considered difficult and innovative, with two-thirds of the problems featuring new formats that required flexible and creative approaches.

Among the outstanding performers, Nguyen Huu Tuan ranked sixth overall while Nguyen Bui Duc Dung placed 11th, with both winning gold medals.

At the 2025 APIO, the Vietnamese team won one gold, two silvers, and three bronzes.
