Bui Quoc Thai, director of the An Giang Department of Tourism, on Friday said that following its merger with the former Kien Giang Province, the new An Giang Province now boasts a full range of assets, including rivers, mountains, seas, and forests, enabling the development of distinctive tourism products.
However, he noted that the local tourism sector has faced challenges during the transition period, particularly in public governance.
Transport infrastructure and tourism products in U Minh Thuong and An Giang’s Seven Mountains areas remain limited, while community-based tourism has yet to leave a strong mark, resulting in visitor numbers falling short of expectations.
Phu Quoc Island, meanwhile, has been a magnet for international visitors and is set to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2027.
The event presents a major opportunity to promote Phu Quoc Island and its coastal tourism.
The province plans to develop tourism integrated with the marine economy, while leveraging international events and cooperation linked to APEC to attract more visitors and investors.
“We are developing high-end island and coastal resort tourism, MICE tourism, and cultural experience tourism linked with spiritual tourism in An Giang’s Seven Mountains area, to enhance competitiveness and encourage higher visitor spending,” Thai said.
“Step by step, An Giang aims to become an integrated tourism hub linking the sea, border areas, and inland destinations of the Mekong Delta, and to reach international markets."
The Department of Tourism said An Giang has accelerated the restructuring of its tourist markets and revamping promotional efforts, while encouraging businesses to continuously improve service quality and roll out distinctive, high-end tourism products.
As a result, An Giang welcomed more than 24.1 million visitors in 2025, including over 1.9 million international arrivals, generating nearly VND68 trillion (US$2.6 billion) in tourism revenue.
