Australian kangaroo meat to regain market access to Vietnam this year

According to a joint statement on deepening the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership following talks between General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra on August 11, the two countries’ leaders welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Agriculture and Sustainable Development, as well as close coordination in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors.

They also welcomed efforts to promote market opening, including allowing Australian kangaroo meat and venison to regain access to the Vietnamese market soon in 2026, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The two countries’ leaders emphasized the importance of building resilient and diversified supply chains, including in critical minerals.

They welcomed initiatives to promote high-quality and sustainable investment, including A$1.3 billion in support from Export Finance Australia (EFA) for infrastructure development and exports to Vietnam since 2017.

“I'm particularly pleased that Vietnam has agreed to provide market access for Australian kangaroo and deer meat,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a joint media statement released by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam.

“This will open up avenues for up to half a million dollars in trade for Australian exporters,” he added.

“That's good news for Australian producers and another sign of the growing strength of our economic relationship.”

According to him, Australia and Vietnam are close friends and trusted strategic partners.

“Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing economies in our region,” he said.

“Its success creates opportunities for both of our countries, and our trade relationship is stronger than ever.

“Two-way trade has doubled since 2020 to reach a record $30 billion last year, supporting jobs and businesses in both Australia and Vietnam.”

During their talks, the two leaders reaffirmed the strong foundation of the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, built on strategic trust and mutual understanding over more than 50 years.

The two sides welcomed substantive progress in deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting growing convergence in strategic interests, and agreed to advance cooperation to a higher level and toward the future.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President To Lam and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation left Canberra at noon on Wednesday local time, concluding a successful state visit to Australia from August 9 to 12.
