-- About 14 percent of university students in Vietnam have tried e-cigarettes despite a ban on their sale and advertising that took effect in 2025, according to a study released on Thursday.

-- Vietnam recorded a more-than-202-percent increase in malware linked to online games in the second half of 2025, the highest in Southeast Asia, with cybercriminals using titles such as Roblox, Minecraft, and Genshin Impact to target mainly children and teenagers through fake downloads and promotions that can expose personal and financial data, cybersecurity firm Kaspersky said on Thursday.

-- A whale about 10 meters long and weighing roughly two tonnes washed ashore in Song Cau Ward, Dak Lak Province, south-central Vietnam on Thursday, where residents brought the weakened animal onto the beach after it repeatedly drifted back despite efforts to return it to sea, local officials said.

-- Vietnam’s top labor union said on Thursday it had not proposed changing the 2026 holiday schedule for Hung Kings Commemoration Day and the Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1) holidays despite about 62 percent of more than 70,000 workers surveyed supporting swapping compensatory leave days to extend the break.

-- Japan’s Meiko Electronics said it will invest US$50 million to set up a new subsidiary and plant in Vietnam to boost capacity as customer demand shifts supply chains to ASEAN.

-- Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade said on Thursday it is coordinating with U.S. authorities and preparing a response by April 15 after Washington launched Section 301 investigations into multiple economies, including Vietnam, over excess capacity and forced labor concerns.

-- The Ministry of Industry and Trade on Thursday cut retail fuel prices for a second straight day, with E5 RON92 capped at VND22,344 ($0.85) per liter, RON95-III at VND23,543 ($0.9), diesel at VND32,969 ($1.25), and mazut at VND22,613 ($0.86) per kg, while resuming contributions to the fuel price stabilization fund.

Ho Chi Minh City

-- A planned commercial complex integrated with a metro station at the A1 roundabout in Ho Chi Minh City’s Binh Duong Ward has remained idle for nearly two years after its construction started in July 2024, with the work halting after foundation piling, officials said.

-- An elementary school in Ho Chi Minh City’s Binh Quoi Ward on Thursday suspended its boarding meal service after more than 100 students reported symptoms including vomiting, fever, and fatigue from early Wednesday morning before eating at school, with over 40 sent home and two hospitalized for monitoring as authorities investigate the cause.
