COVID-19 Updates

-- The Ministry of Health on Wednesday morning confirmed 4,802 new COVID-19 infections, including 2,128 cases in Ho Chi Minh City, taking the national tally to 232,937 patients, with 80,348 recoveries and 4,145 deaths.

-- Authorities administered a record of over 1.4 million COVID-19 vaccine doses on Tuesday, increasing Vietnam’s total number of shots given out to more than 11.3 million.

-- Hanoi chairman Chu Ngoc Anh on Tuesday approved a plan to carry out a massive COVID-19 testing drive until August 17 with a target to collect 1.3 million samples.

-- Ho Chi Minh City started using 19,000 doses of Vero Cell COVID-19 vaccine developed by China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm) to inoculate its people on Tuesday.

-- Ho Chi Minh City needs 12,000 more health workers to deal with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to Huynh Thanh Nhan, director of the municipal Department of Home Affairs.

-- The 36th Contracting Squadron at Andersen Air Force Base recently partnered with the government of Vietnam to help bring COVID-19 relief by purchasing and sending 77 ultra-low temperature freezers at a cost of US$691,000, the Vietnam Government Portal reported on Tuesday.

-- The government has ordered Ho Chi Minh City to double efforts to put the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak under control prior to September 15.

-- Saigon Newport Corporation, which operates Tan Cang - Cat Lai Port in Ho Chi Minh City, on Tuesday held a virtual meeting with nearly 1,500 enterprises to troubleshoot a huge backlog of containers at the biggest international container terminal in Vietnam.

-- Vietnam’s leading conglomerate Vingroup has established two battery production and AI application firms – VINES Energy Solutions JSC (VinES) and VINAI Artificial Intelligence Research and Application JSC (VinAI) – with a total charter capital of over VND1.4 trillion ($61.1 million).
