-- Party General Secretary To Lam, his spouse, and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation on Wednesday attended the inauguration of Vietnam’s Consulate General in Busan and the 30th anniversary of Busan’s twinning with Ho Chi Minh City, as part of his four-day state visit to South Korea.

Society

-- A low-pressure area will possibly form over the central East Vietnam Sea around August 14-15 and could intensify further, while both northern and southern Vietnam may see widespread moderate to heavy rain from August 15 to 19, according to the national weather forecasting agency.

-- The Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in Gia Lai Province is preparing a dossier to seek UNESCO recognition of the Roc Tung-Go Da archeological complex as a World Heritage Site, the department’s leader said on Wednesday.

Economy

-- Da Nang City has approved the construction of the first of 35 planned resettlement areas for Vietnam’s North-South high-speed rail project, with a total investment of more than VND76 billion (US$2.9 million).

-- Bamboo Airways announced on Wednesday evening that its board has accepted the resignations of chairman Pham Ngoc Vinh and CEO Luong Hoai Nam, both citing personal reasons. To ensure smooth operations, the board appointed Le Thai Sam as chairman and Truong Phuong Thanh as CEO, effective the same day.

Ho Chi Minh City

-- The city’s border guard forces detected 18 cases involving drugs and banned goods in the first six months of 2025, imposing more than VND500 million ($19,000) in fines, the municipal Border Guard Command reported on Wednesday.

-- The municipal Traffic Police Division will temporarily suspend its administrative violation processing system for five days, from 6:30 pm on Wednesday to 6:00 am on Monday next week, for upgrades and form updates.

-- From mid-August, Tan Son Nhat International Airport’s newly-built T3 Terminal will handle all domestic carriers except Vietjet, which will continue operating at T1. Bamboo Airways will offer free ticket changes during the first week of its move to assist passengers.

World News

-- Wildfires caused by arsonists or thunderstorms and fanned by a heatwave and strong winds wreaked destruction across southern Europe on Wednesday, burning homes and forcing thousands of residents and tourists to flee, Reuters reported.

-- At least 26 people died in a migrant shipwreck off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa on Wednesday and 60 were brought ashore, the coastguard said, adding that the death toll was still provisional amid ongoing search operations, according to Reuters.
