-- The National Assembly Standing Committee will hold its fifth session in three phases, taking up 25 draft laws and resolutions, including the revised Penal Code, the revised Law on Organization of Criminal Investigation Agencies, and the review of the draft law amending Article 6 and Appendix IV on conditional business sectors and lines under the Law on Investment, among others, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

Society

-- Dong Nai City, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, aims to complete its 6.6-kilometer section of the 52-kilometer-long Ho Chi Minh City - Thu Dau Mot - Chon Thanh Expressway, which is set to link the two cities, by the end of the year.

-- Nearly 99 percent of the upgrade and rehabilitation work at Lien Khuong International Airport in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong has been completed. The airport will reopen on August 19.

Ho Chi Minh City

-- Ho Chi Minh City aims to fully address pressing environmental hotspots by 2030 and create a clean and healthy living environment by 2045, while working toward net-zero emissions.

-- Traffic remained surprisingly smooth during Thursday evening's rush hour as Ho Chi Minh City implemented a one-way car restriction on Cach Mang Thang Tam Street to facilitate construction of an underground station for metro line No. 2.

-- The city's total import-export turnover reached $120.6 billion in the first seven months of 2026, recording a trade deficit of roughly $5.86 billion, according to the Department of Industry and Trade.

Economy

-- The government has tasked the Ministry of Finance with considering raising the annual revenue threshold for business households and individuals eligible to use a simplified tax calculation method from VND3 billion (US$114,900) to VND10 billion ($382,990).

Sports

-- The Vietnam national team left for Malaysia on Thursday morning to prepare for the first leg of their 2026 ASEAN Championship semifinal against Malaysia, scheduled for 8:00 pm on August 16 at Kuala Lumpur Stadium.

-- Only around 3,500 tickets, roughly one-sixth of the stadium’s capacity, have been sold for the match between Malaysia and Vietnam.
