-- Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Chinese Premier Li Qiang met in Tianjin on Tuesday, agreeing to implement high-level agreements and turn recent exchanges into concrete outcomes.

-- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with major Chinese corporations on Tuesday to discuss boosting cooperation in infrastructure, finance, trade, and investment, during his trip to China for the World Economic Forum in Tianjin.

-- Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu has been elected chair of the ongoing 35th meeting of the States Parties to the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (SPLOS 35), which opened in New York on Tuesday (local time).

Society

-- Foreigners with Vietnamese spouses or family ties can now apply for Vietnamese citizenship without the need to meet residency, language or financial requirements, under new amendments to the Law on Vietnamese Nationality passed on Tuesday.

-- Vietnam’s national weather agency said on Tuesday night that a tropical depression over the East Vietnam Sea is expected to strengthen slightly over the next 24 hours as it moves toward China’s Hainan Island, but is unlikely to develop into a storm.

-- Noi Bai International Airport said on Monday that the Northern Airports Authority fined a Vietnamese man VND4 million (US$153) for claiming he had a bomb in his carry-on luggage after Malaysia Airlines flight MH752 from Kuala Lumpur landed in Hanoi.

-- Police at Noi Bai International Airport tracked down and took action against a couple who faked a ride-hailing app to overcharge a Taiwanese tourist VND900,000 ($34) for a trip to downtown Hanoi, which normally costs around VND367,000 ($14).

-- Work on key components of a VND145 billion ($5.5 million) project to renovate the area in front of Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 will begin in August, aiming to shape a new green space and public square by the end of this year.

-- Imports of wide hot-rolled coil (HRC) steel from China to Vietnam surged to 181,000 tonnes in May, 25 times higher than the same month last year, according to the Customs of Vietnam.
