BRICS priorities align with Vietnam's 2045 development vision: Indian diplomat

He made the remarks during an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) online newspaper ahead of Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung’s trip to India for the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi on September 12-13.

“We attach great importance to Prime Minister Le Minh Hung’s visit. It is his first visit to India in his current capacity, and it comes at a particularly significant moment, with India hosting the 18th BRICS Summit and Vietnam participating as a BRICS Partner Country,” the Indian diplomat said.

India’s chairmanship of BRICS this year is guided by four pillars, including resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainable development.

He said these priorities “resonate with Vietnam’s own development vision toward 2045,” while India itself is working toward becoming a developed country by 2047.

Vietnam’s role is seen as central to India’s Indo-Pacific vision.

“Vietnam has a great deal to contribute. It is an important member of ASEAN, an important partner for India under our Act East Policy and our Indo-Pacific vision, and an economy with valuable experience in development, manufacturing, trade integration and innovation,” the official added.

“Both countries also share a strong commitment to multilateralism, the rule of law, UNCLOS 1982, freedom of navigation, and regional peace, stability, and prosperity.”

The visit also underscores the growing momentum in bilateral relations.

Following Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam’s state visit to India in May, this marks the second high-level Vietnamese delegation to India in under six months.

“The frequency of these visits is itself a very strong signal of the importance both countries attach to the relationship,” the consul general said, noting that India’s Prime Minister Modi described bilateral ties as entering a “golden era.”

Beyond BRICS, trade and investment remain a priority.

Both countries have set a target of US$25 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, with Ho Chi Minh City and southern Vietnam expected to play a key role.

“For Ho Chi Minh City and southern Vietnam, I think the most important objective is to move increasingly from discussion to delivery,” the official explained, highlighting upcoming initiatives such as an India-Vietnam Future Technology Forum set to be held in Ho Chi Minh City in October during the Autumn Economic Forum, with India’s Deputy Minister for Electronics and Information Technology expected to lead a delegation of Indian technology companies.

He highlighted key sectors for cooperation, including technology, digital transformation, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, renewable energy, manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, and tourism.

“The priority is not only to increase the volume of trade, but to make the relationship more diversified and investment-led,” the Indian diplomat emphasized.

He expressed confidence that the $25-billion target will become much more attainable, if both sides can generate more joint ventures, technology partnerships and two-way investment in southern Vietnam.
