In response, the Public Transportation Management Center under the municipal Department of Transport and Public Works confirmed that it had already mapped out a comprehensive plan to ensure smooth bus operations across the city during the holiday.
Passenger demand at the airport is expected to rise, and current bus capacity is deemed sufficient to meet the increase, said the center.
The center requested that all bus routes connecting to the airport operate according to the schedules and service parameters issued by the department and the center, in order to avoid disrupting passengers' travel plans.
The Saigon Bus Station–Tan Son Nhat International Airport route, or Bus No. 109, will see a significant increase in frequency.
The current 42 trips per day will be ramped up to 110 trips daily starting April 30 to accommodate the opening of the T3 terminal, which will serve domestic flights.
Additionally, interprovincial non-subsidized route No. 72-1 from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Vung Tau Bus Station in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province will be connected to the new terminal to better serve passengers traveling between the city and neighboring provinces.
Public transport services to the T1 and T2 terminals, which are serving both domestic and international passengers, are already sufficient.
Key subsidized bus routes, including Bus No. 103, connecting Cho Lon Bus Station to Nga Tu Ga Bus Station, and Bus No. 152 plying the Trung Son Residential Area - Tan Son Nhat International Airport route, will maintain their existing schedules.
In addition, the center will make appropriate adjustments to other bus routes connecting major bus stations, metro line No. 1, and the outlying district of Can Gio.
According to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam, the T3 terminal will be put into service on April 30, coinciding with one of Vietnam’s busiest travel periods.
Most of Vietnam Airlines’ domestic flights will operate at the T3 terminal from this date, except for routes to Con Dao Island, Ca Mau Province, and Rach Gia City under Kien Giang Province, which will continue using the T1 terminal.
The new terminal can be accessed via Streets 18E and C2 in Tan Binh District.
To facilitate smooth access, the city’s department is finalizing traffic flow adjustments and coordination plans in the surrounding areas.
The department also predicted a surge in airport traffic during the upcoming holiday, with up to 120,000 passengers passing through daily, a 10 percent year-on-year increase.
Construction of the T3 terminal began in December 2022 at a total cost of some VND11 trillion (US$427 million).
The project comprises a passenger terminal, a multi-story parking facility with commercial services, an elevated road system, and an aircraft parking area.
The terminal is expected to serve more than 20 million passengers annually and handle up to 7,000 passengers per hour during peak times.
Public workers in Vietnam will enjoy a five-day holiday from April 30 to May 4 in celebration of the country’s 50th Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1).
