From 7:00 pm Friday to 7:00 am Tuesday, rainfall across provinces from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai ranged from 200 to 350 millimeters, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority.

Hue City and Da Nang City recorded 500 to 700 mm, with some sites exceeding 1,000 mm.

The Bach Ma station in Hue logged 2,785 mm, while Khe Tre measured 1,484 mm and Huong Son 1,270 mm.

Southern Vietnam averages 1,800 to 2,000 mm of rain a year, meaning recent totals in Hue and Da Nang matched or surpassed half a year's rainfall in the south.

More heavy rain is forecast from Tuesday morning through Wednesday night, with 150 to 300 mm expected in southern Quang Tri and eastern Quang Ngai and up to 600 mm in Hue and Da Nang, the agency said.

Meteorologists said the rain was caused by moist easterly winds combining with a cold air mass and mountainous terrain that traps moisture along the coast.
