Sales of Christmas decorations in Ho Chi Minh City have fallen sharply this year as recent storms and floods dampened demand, shop owners said.

Vendors on Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street, the city’s main hub for festive decorations, said wholesale buyers from central provinces including Khanh Hoa, Da Nang, and Dak Lak have reduced or stopped orders.

These central provinces were hit by mid-November floods that left more than 100 people dead or missing and caused widespread damage, straining household and business spending.

“Many places suffered heavy damage, so people are less willing to spend on decorations this season,” said Phan Viet Hung, owner of a Christmas decor shop.

Shoppers have focused on low-cost items such as ornaments, tinsel, and small lights, while larger products like full-sized trees and elaborate displays have seen little interest.

Household and commercial buyers are also reusing decorations from previous years instead of purchasing complete sets.

Despite slower sales, prices have remained stable.

Small tabletop Christmas trees cost VND25,000–90,000 (US$1–3.4), medium trees VND100,000–300,000 ($3.8–11.4), and larger trees 1.2–3 meters high range from VND400,000 ($15.2) to around VND6 million ($227.5).

Other popular items include ornaments, wreaths, and LED lights.

Retailers expect a potential pick-up in mid-December when families traditionally decorate for the holidays, but many remain cautious about stocking large inventories amid reduced demand.
