The city’s Department of Construction reported to the municipal administration on Wednesday that the consortium’s application is under review by the Department of Finance.
The project is one of three major port developments, including Can Gio, Cai Mep Ha, and Gemadept-Terminal Link, scheduled to break ground during the 51st anniversary of the Liberation of southern Vietnam and National Reunification on April 30.
The Can Gio international transshipment port project covers about 571 hectares, with a designed capacity of 21 million TEUs per year and a main wharf stretching 7.5 kilometers.
The country’s prime minister approved the project in 2025, and Ho Chi Minh City began seeking strategic investors last month.
Terminal Investment Limited Holding S.A is a subsidiary of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container shipping line headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
MSC’s fleet capacity exceeds 23 million TEUs annually, accounting for 18 percent of the world's shipping capacity, with services connecting more than 500 ports worldwide.
In Vietnam, MSC already operates routes to Hai Phong, Da Nang, and Cai Mep-Thi Vai, transporting over one million TEUs of import-export cargo each year.
The Cai Mep Ha port project, valued at VND50.2 trillion ($1.9 billion) and led by a consortium of Geleximco Group, International Transportation and Trading JSC, and State Capital Investment Corporation, will feature a 6.9-kilometer wharf with a designed capacity of 11 million TEUs annually.
Phase one includes two 900-meter berths and nine barge berths, with investment of about VND14.867 trillion ($565 million).
Meanwhile, the Gemadept-Terminal Link project is entering its second phase, adding 285 meters of main wharf for vessels up to 250,000 DWT, a 359-meter upstream wharf for ships up to 150,000 DWT, and a 390-meter barge wharf. The investment for this phase is about VND8.361 trillion ($317 million).
Authorities said these projects are critical to positioning Ho Chi Minh City as a leading maritime logistics hub in Southeast Asia, directly connecting Vietnam to global supply chains.
