Building on the excitement of previous competition nights, the DIFF grandstands and many streets along the Han River were packed with spectators from early in the evening.
Many residents and visitors chose prime viewing spots along the riverbank to await what was widely regarded as one of the most anticipated contests of DIFF 2026, featuring two cultures rich in distinctive traditions.
This year, Japan was represented by Tamaya Kitahara Fireworks, known for its world-famous traditional Hanabi fireworks artistry, while Italy’s Martarello Group S.L.R. returned as a DIFF legend, having won the championship twice in a row in previous editions.

The Japanese team opened the competition with a performance inspired by the simple beauty and harmony between people and nature.
According to the Japanese team, this year’s display focused on highlighting similarities between Vietnamese and Japanese cultures, particularly a way of life that embraces nature, values balance, and appreciates life’s simple pleasures.
Bringing a performance infused with the spirit of Wabi-sabi, the Japanese team guided spectators on an emotional journey where beauty was expressed through subtlety, harmony, and poetic moments of stillness.

The audience repeatedly expressed admiration as golden fireworks slowly cascaded through the sky like soft waterfalls of light.
The effect was created using Nishiki Kamuro, one of Japan's signature pyrotechnic techniques, producing graceful layers of light that embody the identity of Japan.
The Japanese team’s music selection also became a highlight, energizing the grandstands with pieces deeply associated with Japanese culture such as New Genesis, Always With Me, and music from the historical drama Ryomaden.

Meanwhile, the Italian team presented a performance titled Echoes Becoming Future, continuing the cinematic storytelling style that has defined Martarello’s reputation for more than a century.
Through the language of light and music, the European team told a story about connecting traditional values with modern life.
Beginning with majestic European classical compositions such as Lacrimosa and works inspired by Vivaldi, the Italian performance gradually led spectators from the depth of Europe’s cultural heritage into contemporary rhythms.

One particularly surprising moment came when the Italian team skillfully incorporated Vietnamese hit songs, including See Tinh, creating emotional connections with the audience.
Multilayered fireworks effects, cinematic climaxes, and seamless synchronization between music and light transformed the Han River sky into a giant artistic stage.
Each segment unfolded like a film depicting humanity’s cultural journey, where traditional values are continually renewed to embrace the future.
Beyond the visual spectacle of world-class fireworks displays, many spectators were especially impressed by how both teams used music to tell stories about culture.
