Da Nang has kicked off construction bidding for the Hoa Phuoc wholesale market, a project that aims to become the largest agricultural distribution hub in central Vietnam and the Central Highlands.

With an investment of more than VND272 billion (US$10.5 million), the market is set to play a pivotal role in the region's commercial infrastructure and urban development plans.

Located in Hoa Phuoc Commune, Hoa Vang District, the market will span more than 30 hectares.

Once complete, it will replace the aging Hoa Cuong Wholesale Market in Hai Chau District.

The Da Nang board responsible for civil, industrial, and technical infrastructure recently issued a call for bids on the VND45 billion ($1.7 million) construction package.

The work is expected to be completed within 240 days.

Approved for adjustment by the Hoa Vang District People's Committee in 2023, the project also includes significant investments in infrastructure upgrades, including traffic and drainage improvements.

A key feature will be a new drainage pipeline connecting to National Highway 1A, designed to ease flooding and improve land use efficiency in resettled areas.

A representative from the project management board said the market would not only relieve pressure on the existing wholesale facility, but also restructure the city's distribution network and strengthen connectivity in the southwestern part of Da Nang.

Hoa Cuong wholesale market struggles with overcrowding

Currently, the Hoa Cuong Wholesale Market in Hoa Cuong Nam Ward serves as the region's primary distribution center for agricultural goods, but after nearly two decades of use, it is showing clear signs of strain.

Spread over just two hectares, the market is severely overcrowded and facing structural decline, falling short of modern food safety and hygiene standards.

The Hoa Phuoc wholesale market project in Da Nang City, with a total investment of over VND272 billion ($10.5 million), aims to become the largest hub for gathering, transshipment, and distribution of agricultural products in the central and Central Highlands regions.

Each day, an estimated 300-350 metric tons of agricultural products pass through the market, with over half consisting of vegetables, tubers, and fruit.

The facility's layout of small kiosks and stalls is no longer adequate for the growing volume of business.

Management officials have acknowledged that despite regular maintenance and periodic upgrades, the market's deterioration has reached a point where relocation and expansion are necessary.

City officials hope the new Hoa Phuoc facility will meet long-term demand, resolve traffic and sanitation challenges, and help modernize the regional supply chain for agricultural goods.
