Authorities in Da Nang City, central Vietnam on Sunday launched a military-led operation to search for the remains of eight war martyrs inside the wartime Da Sap Cave in Ha Nha Commune.

Historical documents and testimonies from wartime witnesses indicate that eight soldiers were killed in the area during the resistance war against the U.S., according to the Da Nang Military Command.

Colonel Tran Huu Ich, commander of the Da Nang Military Command, said that the recovery mission would face significant challenges due to the site's rugged terrain.

The cave entrance collapsed decades ago, and the area continues to pose safety risks.

Despite the difficult conditions, search teams are committed to remaining at the site for as long as necessary, setting up temporary camps in the forest and continuing the operation until the mission is completed, he said.

Historical records describe Da Sap Cave as an important wartime logistics depot where food supplies, weapons, and ammunition were stored to support military operations in the Quang Da battlefield.

In late April 1969, the area came under heavy aerial bombardment and artillery attacks, causing the cave entrance to collapse and trapping numerous soldiers inside.

Before the search started, officials and military representatives offered incense in tribute to the fallen soldiers in the area.

A memorial prayer ceremony was also held to honor those believed to have lost their lives at the site.

As planned, any remains recovered at the cave will be honored in a memorial service before being reburied at the Ha Nha Commune Martyrs' Cemetery.
