The infant was delivered after her mother, who had traveled to the central Vietnamese city for a holiday, was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia at 25 weeks of pregnancy, a complication that threatened the lives of both mother and child.

The woman was admitted to Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children on March 16, one day before the family’s scheduled flight home to Singapore, after developing abnormal symptoms.

“Our goal was to prolong the pregnancy as long as possible while ensuring the safety of both mother and child,” said Huynh Thi Le, head of the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

After intensive treatment and coordination among medical teams, doctors were able to extend the pregnancy by about two weeks.

On March 27, doctors opted for an emergency delivery after detecting signs of severe fetal distress.

The baby girl was delivered at 27 weeks and one day of gestation, weighing just 720 grams.

The infant, classified as extremely premature and extremely low birth weight, faced multiple complications including respiratory distress, pulmonary hypertension, and blood glucose disorders.

She required mechanical ventilation, circulatory support medication, and intensive monitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit.

The hospital said the parents remained closely involved throughout the treatment process, participating in skin-to-skin care, breastfeeding support, and daily recovery efforts.

Over time, the infant overcame complications associated with prematurity, began breathing independently, was breastfed successfully, and gained weight.

Le said language and cultural differences posed challenges during the family’s stay.

“The father frequently used translation applications to communicate with medical staff, ask questions, and understand every step of his daughter’s treatment,” she said.

The baby was discharged on Monday weighing 2,655 grams, the hospital said.

In a handwritten letter to doctors and nurses, the father, identified as Chen, wrote: “Words cannot describe the gratitude we felt and how grateful we were with the help and understanding from the doctors and staff.

“Although language and communication with translation was a big hurdle, it was overcome by the friendliness and kind helpfulness of the doctors and nurses.”

“We were fortunate to have the help of a team of kind doctors and nurses. God bless you.”
