Da Nang streets turn into makeshift parking lots

Several streets in Da Nang City, central Vietnam have become de facto parking lots, with rows of cars lining both sides of the road, causing traffic congestion and safety hazards for residents.

On streets such as Nguyen Gian Thanh, Dinh Nup, Le Duy Dinh, and Ly Trien, cars are parked day and night, significantly narrowing the roadway and making it difficult for drivers to pass, especially during rush hours.

Many vehicles remain covered and stationary for days.

Nguyen Van Si, a resident of An Khe Ward who frequently uses Dinh Nup and Ly Trien Streets, said that navigating through these streets often requires inching forward to avoid collisions.

“The whole road feels like a parking lot,” he said.

Some sidewalks are also occupied, with residents setting up temporary canopies or frames to reserve private parking spaces, leaving no room for pedestrians.

Locals said the obstruction creates blind spots that endanger children and other road users.

Ngo Ngoc Hau, chairman of the An Khe Ward administration, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that most vehicles belong to local residents who lack private parking spaces.

As the streets have no ‘no parking’ signs, authorities can only remind and encourage people to avoid obstructing traffic.

However, Hau acknowledged the need for long-term solutions to maintain safety and urban aesthetics.

In the coming months, the ward will coordinate with urban management teams to inspect and strictly penalize illegal encroachment of sidewalks and roadways.

Authorities will also consider creating more designated parking areas to meet residents’ needs while maintaining public order, Hau said.
