Memories of his late father’s years in Hanoi, three visits to Vietnam, and 55 years of Vietnam-Denmark diplomatic relations shaped a warm meeting between Danish King Frederik X and Queen Mary and Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse, Ngo Phuong Ly, in Copenhagen on Monday.

The meeting took place during the top Vietnamese leader’s state visit to Denmark from Monday through Wednesday, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

King Frederik X shared his deep affection for Vietnam and its people, recalling visits to the Southeast Asian country in 2009, 2011, and 2022, when he was Crown Prince.

The Danish royal family’s special connection with Vietnam also stems from fond memories of the late Prince Henrik, the king’s father, who spent several years living in Hanoi.

Party chief and State President To Lam expressed his appreciation for King Frederik X, Queen Mary, and the Danish Royal Family's long-standing affection for Vietnam and their positive contributions to bilateral ties.

He also thanked the Danish king, queen, and Royal Family for their warm hospitality during his first visit to Denmark, as well as highlighted the king’s important role in advancing Vietnam-Denmark relations.

Frederik X visited Vietnam in 2011 when he was Crown Prince.

In 2022, he returned with the then Crown Princess Mary, now Queen Mary, leading a Danish business delegation to promote cooperation in green transition initiatives.

Those visits paved the way for bilateral cooperation and the establishment of a green strategic partnership in 2023.

Party General Secretary and State President To Lam stressed that Vietnam deeply values the invaluable support Denmark has provided over the past 55 years, from the country’s reconstruction and development to its ongoing efforts in economic reform, international integration, and green transition.

Vietnam attaches great importance to its traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Denmark and seeks to deepen ties further with one of its important partners in Northern Europe and the wider European region.

Both leaders praised the positive development of bilateral relations, particularly since the establishment of a comprehensive partnership in 2013 and a green strategic partnership in 2023.

Economic, trade, and investment cooperation has continued to expand, with Danish companies such as LEGO, Pandora, and Carlsberg establishing operations, building partnerships, and growing their businesses in Vietnam.

Their presence has contributed to Vietnam’s socio-economic development, job creation, technology transfer, and the promotion of green and sustainable growth.

The Party leader expressed his hope that King Frederik X would continue to support and encourage Danish businesses and organizations to strengthen cooperation and expand investment in Vietnam.

The two leaders and their spouses expressed confidence that Vietnam-Denmark friendship and cooperation would continue to grow, serving the interests and prosperity of both peoples while making significant contributions to peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable development in the region and around the world.

Party chief and State President To Lam also invited King Frederik X and Queen Mary to visit Vietnam in the near future.
