Doctors remove 4cm parasitic worm from woman’s eye in northern Vietnam

The 67-year-old patient, from Dong Trieu Ward, reported redness and discomfort in her right eye for nearly 20 days before seeking medical attention at Vietnam–Sweden Uong Bi Hospital.

Doctors identified a white thread-like object under the conjunctiva of her right eye and suspected a parasitic infection linked to inflammation in the episcleral tissue.

They performed a minor surgical procedure to remove a dead roundworm measuring approximately 4cm from beneath the conjunctiva, at the site of inflammation.

The patient was hospitalized for further treatment and screening, which found no signs of other parasitic infections, the hospital said in a statement.

Lab tests identified the parasite as Toxocara spp., a type of roundworm commonly found in dogs and cats that can be transmitted to humans through contact with contaminated soil or animal feces.

The patient was treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, and antiparasitic drugs. 

Her condition has since stabilized with significant improvement in vision and no lasting damage reported.

Medical staff warned that although such cases are rare, parasitic infections in the eye can cause serious complications including uveitis, retinal detachment, and even vision loss if not treated promptly.

Health officials advised the public to practice proper hygiene, deworm pets regularly, and avoid consuming raw or undercooked food to reduce the risk of parasitic transmission.
