The Southern and Central Highlands Hydrometeorological Center said that the current weather instability in Ho Chi Minh City and across southern Vietnam is being caused by a weak trough of low pressure linked to a hot low-pressure system in the west.
Satellite imagery and radar detected the formation of thunderclouds over Thu Duc City, Binh Thanh District, and District 12, bringing showers accompanied by thunder and lightning.
The storm clouds are expected to expand into surrounding areas throughout the day.
Rainfall ranged between 3 and 10mm in most areas, with some locations exceeding 10mm.
The regional weather agency warned of potential hazards during thunderstorms, including gusts reaching 8-17 meters per second, localized flooding, whirlwinds, hail, and lightning.
While skies cleared briefly after the morning showers, more scattered thunderstorms are forecast to hit the southern metropolis in the afternoon and evening, with moderate to heavy rain expected in some areas.
Temperatures remain high across the region, with southeastern provinces reaching 34-36 degrees Celsius and some areas exceeding 36 degrees Celsius.
In the southwestern or Mekong Delta provinces, temperatures could hover around 32-35 degrees Celsius.
The agency added that upper-level disturbances are strengthening, meaning Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces should expect variable cloud cover, sunny days, and recurring afternoon thunderstorms in the coming days.
The public should stay alert for strong winds, lightning, whirlwinds, and hail during storms.
