Each sailboat accommodates two athletes and meets international standards.
According to Truong Cong Quoc Viet, deputy director of the Can Tho Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the regatta is part of a series of activities marking the Can Tho River Culture Festival, which runs from December 27 to January 1.
Viet said he believes the Can Tho open sailing regatta will help create an engaging sporting platform, promote the beauty of Can Tho’s riverine landscape to domestic and international visitors, and meet the public’s demand for cultural and recreational activities.
The Can Tho River Culture Festival, which is being held for the first time in the Mekong Delta city, features a wide range of activities including photo exhibitions, traditional boat races, sailing races, stand-up paddleboard competitions, flyboard performances, and exhibition spaces showcasing tourism products and OCOP (One Commune One Product) items.
Beyond promoting the distinctive river culture of the Mekong Delta in general and Can Tho in particular, the festival also aims to raise public awareness of environmental and river ecosystems protection, as well as sustainable tourism development.
