Traffic police on Wednesday booked a 29-year-old woman for driving in the wrong direction on the Hanoi – Hai Phong Expressway in northern Vietnam.

The driver, identified as N.T.H. from Bac Ninh Province, admitted that around 1:00 pm on Tuesday, she entered the expressway going against traffic.

She was traveling in the innermost lane, next to the median barrier, where the speed limit reaches 120 km/h.

Her actions forced several vehicles moving in the correct direction to brake sharply to avoid collisions.

In one case, a car had to come to a complete stop as she crossed its path while trying to switch lanes.

A video of the incident, filmed by another driver, quickly spread on social media and triggered widespread outrage.

Under Decree 168, which introduced stricter penalties for traffic violations and took effect January 1, 2025, H. faces a fine ranging from VND30-40 million (US$1,160-1,550) and a deduction of 10 points from her license.

At the police station, she submitted a written statement acknowledging the danger of her actions and promised not to repeat them.

The Hanoi–Hai Phong Expressway stretches 105 kilometers, passing through Hanoi, Hung Yen Province, Hai Duong Province, and Hai Phong City.

It has six lanes for traffic and two emergency lanes, with speeds from 60 km/h to 120 km/h.
