Foreign teacher filmed assaulting 2nd graders in southern Vietnam
Police in Can Tho City, southern Vietnam are investigating an incident in which a foreign English teacher was filmed slapping several second-grade students and grabbing one child by the neck, lifting the student off the ground and carrying him out of the classroom at a private school, an officer said on Thursday night.
A 60-second clip has gone viral, showing the alleged assault.
According to the security camera footage, the incident occurred at around 4:00 pm on September 22 in Class 2A2 at Viet-Hoa School.
At the time, the students were divided into smaller groups to practice English conversation with a foreign teacher.
Apart from the foreign teacher wearing a brown shirt, another man in a white shirt is also present in the classroom.
During the lesson, the foreign teacher suddenly approaches the students’ desks and slaps two children sitting at the front desk on the right-hand side.
The teacher then moves to the second desk in the middle row, grabs a boy by the arm and neck, lifts the child off the ground, and carries him out of the classroom.
After returning to the room, he slaps another student sitting at the front desk, according to the footage.
The incident took place in front of the other students and the man.

Tran Tan Buu, principal of Viet-Hoa School, confirmed that the incident took place on the afternoon of September 22 during an English communication lesson in Class 2A2, local media reported.
He said the school had entered into a teaching partnership with an English language center.
The man, who assaulted the students, was a Russian national employed as an English teacher by the center.
The other man in the footage was a Vietnamese teaching assistant.
Neither individual was a permanent member of the school’s teaching staff.
Both had been assigned to the school by the language center.
The school has yet to establish what prompted the teacher’s actions, as its classroom security cameras record video but do not capture audio.

Immediately after learning of the incident, the school’s management issued direct apologies to the affected students and their parents.
It also reported the case to police for investigation and appropriate action in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, the English language center responsible for the teacher has terminated his employment contract.
