Hoang Gia Khanh, general director of Vietnam Railways, said the same day that crews were still working to repair the damaged track and handle the derailment at the summit of the Hai Van Pass.
Preliminary information shows that heavy rain caused rocks and soil to slide down the mountainside on Saturday morning, breaking a section of railway at the top of the pass.
A freight train later derailed after running over the damaged track.
No casualties were reported.
Khanh described the incident as very dangerous, saying railway crews were making urgent efforts to rescue the derailed train and repair the damaged track as soon as possible.
Following the disruption, railway authorities suspended train services through the affected section and arranged buses to transport passengers between Da Nang Station and Lang Co Station in Hue City in both directions.
Several passenger trains were forced to stop for further instructions.
Train SE3, which departed from Hanoi on Friday, is waiting at Thua Luu Station in Hue City, while train HD1, departing from Hue on Saturday, is waiting at Lang Co Station in the same city.
Train SE10, which left Ho Chi Minh City on Friday, is waiting at Da Nang Station, while train HD2, departing from Da Nang on Saturday, has stopped at Kim Lien Station in Da Nang.
Railway authorities also suspended the heritage train service HD3/HD4 scheduled for Saturday afternoon between Hue and Da Nang.
