The directive, issued on Thursday, requires school leaders to monitor daily weather forecasts at 7:45 pm on Vietnam Television’s VTV1 channel and decide whether to suspend in-person classes.
Specifically, when forecast temperatures are below 10 degrees Celsius, kindergarten and elementary school students are not required to attend school.
If temperatures drop below seven degrees Celsius, students from kindergarten through middle school are advised to stay home.
In such cases, schools are required to promptly inform parents and prepare online teaching plans.
For families unable to care for children at home, schools are instructed to coordinate with parents to arrange safe supervision on campus.
During cold spells, schools are prohibited from organizing outdoor activities and must adjust schedules to protect student health.
The education department also called on ward and commune authorities, together with school leaders, to coordinate broader cold-weather response measures.
These include reinforcing school facilities to cope with low temperatures, paying attention to semi-boarding meals to ensure adequate nutrition and warmth, and strengthening communication with parents so families can closely monitor students’ health and prevent seasonal illnesses.
