Police in Phu Tho Province, northern Vietnam have charged a 23-year-old man from Hanoi for the alleged rape of a 24-year-old Vietnamese-American woman at a hotel apartment, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

According to investigators, Nguyen Minh Hieu allegedly forced sexual intercourse with the victim, identified as N.T.Q.T., at apartment SK125 in the Lynn Times Thanh Thuy Hotel in Thanh Thuy Commune, Phu Tho Province, on July 5 this year.

The victim, who holds U.S. citizenship and was staying in Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem Ward, filed a criminal complaint on July 21.

Investigators said they immediately launched inquiries despite the incident being reported more than 10 days after it occurred.

Officers interviewed the victim, witnesses, and Hieu.

On Monday, police formally launched a criminal case and charged Hieu for rape under Clause 1, Article 141 of Vietnam’s Penal Code.

Police emphasized that the announcement was intended to clarify the facts and prevent misinformation that could disrupt public order.
