Heavy rain floods northern Vietnamese province, prompts Hanoi alert

Heavy rainfall from late Tuesday to early Wednesday caused localized flooding in a province in northern Vietnam, affecting several other mountainous provinces, while authorities issued flood warnings for Hanoi as downpours continued in the capital.

Flooding was reported in parts of Yen Bai Province, including Luc Yen District and Yen Bai City, after rainfall between 250mm and 300mm overnight, according to Vietnam’s disaster monitoring system.

Streets in Yen Bai City, such as Quang Trung, Kim Dong, Le Van Tam, and Ngo Gia Tu, were waterlogged on Wednesday morning.

In Luc Yen’s Muong Lai Commune, water entered several homes during the night.

Nong Thanh Son, a local official, said flooding and landslides affected households in the commune center.

Local authorities were assessing the impact.

Between 10:00 pm on Tuesday and 4:00 am on Wednesday, widespread rainfall was recorded across Son La, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, and Tuyen Quang Provinces.

In Yen Bai’s Luc Yen District, Lieu Do Commune measured 297mm, Yen The Town 278mm, and Tien Nguyen Commune in Ha Giang’s Quang Binh District 171mm, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.

From 4:00 am to 7:00 am on Wednesday, heavy rain continued in Lai Chau, Yen Bai, and Phu Tho Provinces.

Nam Tam Commune in Lai Chau’s Sin Ho District recorded 360mm.

Minh Quan Commune and Yen Ninh Ward in Yen Bai saw 152mm and 107mm, respectively.

Ha Hoa District in Phu Tho received 100mm.

In Hanoi, rain began early on Wednesday with totals ranging from 20 to 50mm, and over 80mm in some areas.

The meteorological agency warned that continued downpours could lead to street flooding, with expected water depths of 15–20cm, and up to 40cm in flood-prone zones.

The agency forecast further showers and thunderstorms across the northwest and northern delta through Wednesday, with 15–30mm of rain expected and isolated totals exceeding 80mm.

In the Viet Bac region, which covers Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, and Thai Nguyen Provinces, rainfall may reach 150mm in some locations.

Authorities warned of possible flash floods and landslides in mountainous districts, including Muong Te, Sin Ho, and Tam Duong in Lai Chau Province; Luc Yen, Tran Yen, and Van Chan in Yen Bai Province; and Cam Khe, Doan Hung, and Ha Hoa in Phu Tho Province.

Scattered thunderstorms are also expected in the south-central region, Central Highlands and southern provinces on Wednesday evening, with rainfall between 10 and over 100mm.
