Ho Chi Minh City High Command seeks witnesses to locate soldiers missing since 1968 Tet General Offensive and Uprising

The command said historical records and sources from Vietnam and abroad indicate that two mass burial trenches were created near the western end of Tan Son Nhat Airport, where many soldiers who died in the battle during the 1968 Tet General Offensive and Uprising were buried.

Nearly 60 years later, many of those killed have not been found and their families are still awaiting news, it said.

The command called on Vietnamese veterans who took part in or have knowledge of the battle, former U.S. and allied servicemen who served at the airport, relatives of the fallen, local residents, historians and anyone holding diaries, maps, photographs, documents or memories related to post-battle burials to provide information that could help identify the burial sites.

The Ho Chi Minh City High Command said even a single memory, photograph, map or written record could provide a crucial lead in locating the graves and returning the remains of the soldiers to their families.

The attack on Tan Son Nhat Airport took place during the 1968 Tet General Offensive and Uprising, a massive, coordinated surprise military campaign launched by Vietnamese forces against U.S. and then-Saigon administration troops during the American war in Vietnam on January 30–31, 1968, during the Lunar New Year holiday.
