Ho Chi Minh City hospital successfully treats American businessman with 15 years of failed treatments in other countries

The successful surgery allowed the patient to drink water freely without experiencing urinary issues.

About 15 years ago, D.F. sustained an injury in an accident, which led to a urethral stricture that severely disrupted his life.

He endured symptoms such as difficulty urinating, urinary retention, incomplete urination, frequent urination, and recurring infections.

Over time, these complications also affected his kidney and bladder functions. 

Despite undergoing six surgeries at major medical centers in the U.S., Thailand, and Singapore, all attempts failed, leaving him anxious and discouraged.

On May 17, Dr. Do Lenh Hung, head of the department of urethral reconstructive surgery, led a surgical team to perform a urethroplasty on the patient.

Despite previous damage and six prior interventions complicating the case, the doctors completed the two-hour surgery successfully.

Three weeks after the procedure, D.F.’s urinary function had fully recovered.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health commended Binh Dan Hospital for its continuous development in line with the city's healthcare objectives.

The hospital has been advancing specialized treatment techniques and improving service quality.

Between 2023 and 2025, the hospital performed 1,096 surgeries for patients from 26 countries and territories, including nations in Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Cambodia, China, and other Asian countries.

Most international patients chose Binh Dan Hospital based on recommendations from former patients or medical professionals in the region, highlighting the hospital's strong reputation and treatment quality both among patients and international colleagues.

Associate Professor Dr. Tran Vinh Hung, director of Binh Dan, added that the hospital has sent experienced surgeons to demonstrate and transfer urethral reconstructive techniques in India, Thailand, and Malaysia; to perform laparoscopic kidney surgeries in Indonesia; and to conduct robotic colorectal cancer surgeries in the Philippines.

Doctors from regional countries, the U.S., and Australia have also come to Binh Dan Hospital for training in laparoscopic and urethral reconstructive surgery.
