Following the online reports, the Binh Trieu traffic police team under the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Public Security on Friday coordinated with local authorities to verify the case.
On Saturday, they identified the driver as L.C.T., a 40-year-old resident of Thanh Hoa Province in north-central Vietnam, and summoned him for questioning.
At the police station, T. admitted to the violations, and was booked for multiple infractions under Decree 168/2024, including transporting oversized cargo exceeding the vehicle’s limits, operating a vehicle without a driver’s license, and failing to provide valid vehicle registration.
He was fined a total of VND10 million (US$380).
In addition, his tricycle was impounded for investigation.
Initial findings indicated that the tricycle had no clear origin or legal documentation, failed to meet road safety standards, and was unregistered.
T. explained that on Thursday afternoon, he purchased the old car shell from a local resident on Thanh Xuan 52 Street.
Since the location was only about 300 meters from his home, he decided to transport the car intact without dismantling it, inadvertently causing the obstruction.
He promised not to repeat the offense.
On Friday, the video went viral on social media showing a bulky, old car body being carried on the back of a motorized tricycle which was running on Thanh Xuan 52 Street in Thoi An Ward, sparking frustration among commuters and raising concerns about potential accidents.
Due to the car's length, it blocked the pathway, preventing other vehicles from passing and causing localized congestion.
