The figures were released at a workplace safety seminar organized by the city's Department of Home Affairs.

Tran Quoc Khanh, deputy director of the department, said Ho Chi Minh City has more than 300,000 businesses and about 500,000 business establishments employing around 7.6 million workers, creating growing challenges for occupational safety management.

Khanh said digital transformation has not only improved productivity and competitiveness but it has also introduced new risks in equipment operation and workplace safety.

Reviews of workplace accidents showed three recurring problems: inadequate training in the use of equipment, insufficient supervision and safety reminders, and training programs that failed to focus on practical workplace risks.

Nguyen Tan Loi, deputy chief inspector of the department, said the city recorded 64 workplace accidents in the first six months of 2026, including 52 that occurred during work and 12 outside working activities.

Among the 52 workplace accidents, the youngest victim was 21 years old and the oldest was 64, while workers aged 31-50 account for 29 cases, or 55.7 percent, he said.

Loi said falls from height, workers being struck or crushed by objects or machinery, and electrocution made up 84.6 percent of the workplace accidents, with falls from height the leading cause.

The construction sector recorded 18 falls from height, mainly linked to the absence of guardrails or barriers, failure to use safety harnesses, and inadequate on-site supervision, he said.

Loi said most workplace accidents could be prevented through earlier hazard identification, proper worker assignment, effective equipment controls, and full implementation of safety responsibilities at worksites.

He called for wider use of artificial intelligence cameras, sensors, and electronic logs to provide early warnings and help prevent workplace accidents.
