Ho Chi Minh City set to boost public transit with 5-minute walk access, night buses

Under an ambitious 2026–2030 public transit master plan, the city wants public transportation to cover 15-20 percent of daily travel by 2030 while cutting down on private traffic. 

The goal is not just better coverage, but a cleaner ride: all intra-city buses are slated to run on electric or green energy by 2027, with the entire bus and taxi fleet making the full green transition by 2030.

To pull this off, transit authorities are redesigning the bus network to match the city's expanding footprint. 

Smaller feeder buses will head deep into residential neighborhoods to connect suburban residents directly with metro lines, water buses, and bike-share stations. 

The city is also studying night buses, free downtown routes, and on-demand transit options to fill the gaps.

Regional connections are getting a major boost, too. 

New bus routes will prioritize links to Binh Duong and Ba Ria-Vung Tau areas, urban railway lines, and the upcoming Long Thanh International Airport in neighboring Dong Nai City.

To nudge commuters away from private cars and motorbikes, officials plan to offer discounted or free fares to students, industrial workers, and government staff, along with cheaper transfer rates across buses, metro lines, and water taxis. 

Commuters who park at transport hubs can also expect reduced parking fees.

Supporting infrastructure for public transit will see a major boost, including dedicated bus lanes, priority traffic signals, and upgraded shelters and terminals. 

The city will also set up low-emission zones in central areas, Can Gio, and Con Dao, alongside a network of charging and battery-swapping stations. 

To kick-start the habit, local government employees are being asked to lead by example and take public transit at least twice a week.
