The bicycle lanes will run 5.8 kilometers in both directions between Nguyen Co Thach and D1 Streets.
The project will repurpose unused strips of land along the seven-kilometer-long Mai Chi Tho, one of the city’s largest roads with 10-14 lanes, which connects downtown with the eastern gateway including the An Phu Intersection and the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway.
The new lanes will feature separate markings and traffic signs to keep cyclists apart from cars and motorbikes.
Public bike stations and parking areas will also be set up at convenient points near residential areas such as Sala Urban Area and The New City.
Construction is expected to start in October and finish within three months.
The southern metropolis is also studying similar bike lane projects, including a nearly-four-kilometer corridor on Vo Nguyen Giap Boulevard, from the Rach Chiec Bridge to the Saigon Bridge, and other routes in downtown districts and along existing and future metro lines.
