Ho Chi Minh City will begin work in September on a VND7.3 trillion (US$280 million) project to dredge and upgrade infrastructure and the environment along the north bank of the Doi Canal in District 8.

Funded by the city’s budget, the project is expected to be completed in 2028, according to a recent report submitted by the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board to the municipal People’s Committee.

The project includes nearly 4.3 kilometers of canal embankment, partial dredging of the canal bed, and expanded roadways.

Accordingly, Hoai Thanh and Nguyen Duy Streets will be widened to 20 meters, while a new 16-meter extension of Nguyen Duy Street will be built.

Key infrastructure upgrades will also compose rainwater and wastewater drainage systems, street lighting, green spaces, and the construction of an inland waterway passenger terminal.

The renovation will be carried out in three major construction packages.

The upcoming groundbreaking event is held to mark the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day on September 2.

The board is currently finalizing technical drawings and cost estimates.

Site clearance and relocation of affected households are underway, with land handover expected by August to facilitate the construction.

More than 1,610 households are affected by the project.

Of these, some 1,090 have accepted compensation and 104 have already handed over their land.
