Ho Chi Minh City will stage fireworks at seven locations for 15 minutes on the evening of September 2 to mark the 81st anniversary of Vietnam’s August Revolution and National Day.

Speaking at the city's regular socio-economic press briefing on Thursday, Vo Van Son, deputy chief of office at the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, said a wide range of cultural, artistic and sporting activities would be held across the city during the National Day holiday, creating a festive atmosphere for residents and visitors.

The highlight will be an artistic fireworks display from 9:00 pm to 9:15 pm on September 2 at seven locations, local media reported.

Three sites will feature a combination of high- and low-altitude fireworks, including the area at the entrance to Saigon River Tunnel in An Khanh Ward, the New City Center in Binh Duong Ward, and Tam Thang Tower Square in Vung Tau Ward.

Four low-altitude fireworks displays will be staged at Ba Ria Square Park in Ba Ria Ward, Dam Sen Cultural Park in Binh Thoi Ward, the Saigon Marina IFC tower area in Saigon Ward, and the Kim Long villa area near Rach Dia Bridge in Nha Be Commune.

Ahead of the fireworks, an artistic program will begin at 7:30 pm at three venues, including Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street, an outdoor stage at the New City Center Park in Binh Duong Ward, and Ba Ria Square Park in Ba Ria Ward.

Residents and visitors will also be treated to additional artistic performances in eight wards and communes citywide on September 1 and 2.

Besides, commemorative exhibitions are open to the public through September 5, said Son.

Exhibition goers can visit Chi Lang Park in Saigon Ward, Nguyen Du Street Park in Thu Dau Mot Ward and the traditional revolutionary house at No. 1 Ba Cu Street in Vung Tau Ward.

In addition, incense and flower offerings in tribute to President Ho Chi Minh and President Ton Duc Thang will take place from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on August 28 at the Museum of Ho Chi Minh - Ho Chi Minh City branch, the Ton Duc Thang Museum, the President Ho Chi Minh Monument Park and Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street.

Alongside cultural activities, the city will host a number of sporting events such as a half marathon slated for August 30 in the Tam Thang Tower area of Vung Tau Ward.

The event is expected to attract around 7,000 domestic and international runners.

Civil servants and public employees in Vietnam will enjoy a five-day National Day break this year following a workday swap.

Under Vietnam’s 2019 Labor Code, employees are entitled to 11 fully paid public holidays each year.

These include one day for New Year’s Day, five days for the Lunar New Year, one day for the Hung Kings Commemoration Day, one day for Reunification Day on April 30, one day for International Workers’ Day on May 1 and two days for National Day.

For Vietnam’s National Day 2026, the two official days off fall on Tuesday, September 1 and Wednesday, September 2.

As Monday, August 31 falls between the weekend and the two public holidays, it will be swapped with a working Saturday to create a longer continuous break.

The August 31 working day will therefore be moved to Saturday, August 22, linking the two holidays with the preceding weekend, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The break will run for five consecutive days, from Saturday, August 29 through Wednesday, September 2.
