The southern metropolis surpassed traditional leisure destinations such as Da Nang, Hanoi, Vung Tau City in Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province and Da Lat City in Lam Dong Province in Agoda's ranking of top spots for short holidays.
Short-stay travel — typically lasting one to three days, with one-night or weekend stays most common — appeals especially to young urban professionals and families with busy schedules, offering a quick escape without the need for complex planning or long travel times.
Agoda said the trend is reviving interest in familiar destinations, as travellers seek fresh experiences through compact and efficient itineraries.
Despite lacking beaches or mountains, Ho Chi Minh City has attracted domestic tourists with its vibrant nightlife, modern amenities and diverse food scene.
A one-night stay can include rooftop cocktails, street food and bustling night streets, making it an ideal city break.
Following Ho Chi Minh City in the rankings is Da Nang, known for its beaches and iconic bridges, and Hanoi, appreciated for its culture, history and cuisine.
Vung Tau remains a popular coastal escape for southern residents due to its proximity and ease of access, while Da Lat continues to draw visitors with its cool climate and scenic landscapes.
Vu Ngoc Lam, Agoda's Vietnam country director, said improved transport links and the country's diverse landscape make spontaneous short trips increasingly viable.
