Madame Ly attended the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday as part of her working visit to Russia starting July 22.
The event was among celebrations marking the 135th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh’s birth and the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Russia
The square, located at the intersection of Ho Chi Minh Street and Prosvescheniya Avenue in Vyborgsky District, features a three-meter tall bronze statue of President Ho Chi Minh mounted on a 1.5-meter pedestal within a green space.
At the ceremony, Madame Ly and Saint Petersburg Governor Aleksandr Beglov unveiled the name plaque marking the official opening of Ho Chi Minh Square.
She and other delegates laid flowers at the statue, paying tribute to the great leader—a national liberation hero, a cultural icon, and a close friend of the Russian people.
In his remarks, Governor Beglov affirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam share a strong commitment to strengthening and consolidating Vietnam–Russia relations.
The governor noted that Saint Petersburg now leads Russia’s cooperative activities with Vietnam across various fields.
He described the square’s inauguration as a continuation of the long-standing friendship between Russia and Vietnam, and a symbol of a shared determination to further promote relations between the two countries.
He stressed that Ho Chi Minh Square stands as both a reminder of historical bonds between the two nations and a source of inspiration for future bilateral cooperation.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia Dang Minh Khoi expressed gratitude to the Saint Petersburg administration for naming a square in honor of President Ho Chi Minh.
He highlighted that the city now features a memorial complex dedicated to the late Vietnamese leader, comprising the newly inaugurated square, Ho Chi Minh Street (named in 1978), and a museum space located at High School No. 488 nearby.
These commemorative elements reflect the deep respect and affection the Russian people hold for President Ho Chi Minh and underscore the enduring friendship between the two countries.
