Vietnam celebrates its National Day on September 2, with this year’s public holiday stretching from August 30 to September 2.

Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper observed unusually quiet pedestrian streets in Hoi An ancient town on the morning of August 31.

Despite the peak holiday period and sunny weather, visitor numbers were far lower than in previous years.

“Over the past two days, we sold a moderate number of tickets, but overall it was not as busy as expected,” a ticket booth staff member at Hoi An ancient town said.

“There were fewer international visitors this time, but domestic tourists made up for it.”

Accommodation providers in Hoi An reported a high rate of no-shows, as many long-distance travelers canceled over weather concerns.

The shift of visitor flows to Hanoi for Vietnam’s 80th National Day parade also contributed to the town being quieter than in previous years.

To celebrate Vietnam’s National Day, Hoi An ancient town has been decked out in red with national flags adorning streets, hotel balconies, and restaurants, while souvenir and fashion shops rolled out flag-themed items to heighten the festive spirit.
