A flock of ducks believed to have been swept from the mainland to Hon Tre Island, off Khanh Hoa Province in south-central Vietnam, during recent floods has been taken into care after wandering for two days inside a five-star resort, the operator said on Thursday.

A representative of the resort told local media that the ducks drifted to the island on Tuesday and were moved on Thursday morning to the resort’s zoo area for easier care.

Staff had seen the birds swimming along the beach before gathering them.

The ducks attracted online attention after images of them walking through the resort grounds circulated widely on social media.

Users speculated they were among farm animals washed away during the historic floods that struck Khanh Hoa’s mainland on November 18, though the resort said it could not confirm their origin.

Local outlet Dan Tri reported the flock numbered about 10 and cited residents who believed the ducks might have been carried into rivers during the floods and then swam more than 3km before reaching the island.

Khanh Hoa authorities said the mid-November floods left 22 people dead, damaged or destroyed more than 1,000 homes, and resulted in the loss of nearly 24,500 livestock and poultry.

Economic losses were estimated at more than VND5 trillion (US$189.6 million).

The province has approved financial support for affected households, while police and military units have been deployed to help restore homes, schools, and health facilities.
